(Some people use ‘rock – paper – scissor’ as a ‘tie-breaker’ if they cannot agree about who put their hand on the seat first.)
- Sit in a circle with an extra chair.
- Players next to the extra chair must try to be the first to place their hand on it.
- The ‘winner’ may then move onto the chair and say, ‘I sit...’ – creating an empty chair.
- The person next to the empty chair moves onto it and says, ‘…on the chair…’ - creating a new empty chair.
- The next person moves onto the new empty chair and say, ‘…next to…’. They name someone in the circle. However, this cannot be the person either side of them.
- The person who was named moves next to the person who called them – creating another empty chair!
- Players either side of the new empty chair attempt to put their hand on it first…and the game continues.
- You cannot name someone who has already been named. You can only name the person next to you if they are the only person who has not been named.
- Time how long it takes to play, making sure that everyone has been named. Try to think of strategies to help you improve your time.

As the project develops, the children will be experiencing and evaluating this as a community building activity, before creating content for the book.
- What are the instructions and rules for this activity?
- Why use it?
- How long does it take?
- Which attitudes and skills do you develop during this activity?
- Anything else you should note before playing?
- Creative suggestions to enhance the activity?
- Ideas for reflective questions to ask at the end of the game?
